The flashover voltage for outdoor polymer insulators under desert climatic conditions

This work presents a study on the flashover voltage of outdoor polyester and composite insulators under certain desert climate conditions. After incorporating different concentrations of inorganic fillers (such as alumina trihydrate [ATH], boric acid [H3BO3] and magnesium hydroxide [Mg (OH) 2]), cylindrical polyester composite samples were prepared to improve electricity, Mechanical and thermal properties maximize surface flashover voltage and reduce tracking.

The results show that under dry conditions, the flashover voltage of the sample without filler reaches 38 kV, while the flashover voltage of the sample with 50% ATH filler reaches 47 kV. The comparison of inorganic fillers under various environmental conditions shows that at all filler concentrations, the flashover voltage values of samples containing ATH filler are higher than those of samples containing H3BO3 and Mg (OH) 2 fillers. By adding ATH filler to the polyester samples under sandstorm conditions, the flashover voltage increased by 24%. In addition, in this study, the effects of sandstorms, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, mechanical strength (compressive strength and tensile strength) and thermal properties on the surface of the tested sample were also studied in detail.
